What Causes the “Low disk space” Error?

The “Low disk space” error, also known as “Not Enough Disk Space” error is something that ever Windows and Mac user faces every once in a while. This tutorial will help you find the cause of this error and free up hard drive space on your computer.

What Causes the “Low disk space” Error?
When you get the “Not enough disk space” or “Low disk space” error, this means that your computer is running out of hard drive space and whatever you are doing requires more space than you have available. You may have too many large files on your computer and too much software installed. However, on Windows computers this error can also be caused by a virus that eats up disk space.

How to Repair the “Not enough disk space” Error
To fix this error, the first thing you need to do is make sure that it’s not caused by a virus. If it is, then you’ll need to delete the virus first and then try to recover your disk space.

To find and delete the virus, you’ll need to scan your PC with an up-to-date antivirus program to find the malware. Most modern antiviruses won’t have a problem finding the virus. If you are not sure which anti-malware software to use, try the free version of Malwarebytes - it’s very efficient.

After you remove the virus, don’t forget to scan your PC with registry cleanup software. Doing that will make sure all traces of the virus are deleted and the problem won’t come back.

How to Free Up Disk Space
If the “Low disk space” error is caused by computer clutter, then it’s a lot easier to fix – all you need to do is reorganize your files and software.

Step 1: uninstall software you don’t need

If you have a lot of software that you don’t use, you can free up disk space by simply getting rid of the programs you don’t need. Here is how:

Click on Start and go to the Control Panel
Click on the Uninstall a Program link under Programs
Go through the list of your software and uninstall the programs you don’t need
This should free up a lot of space.

Step 2: delete duplicate files

Duplicate files, especially duplicate photos, music and videos, can be responsible for the “Not enough disk space” error. If you have a lot of duplicates and they are large files, deleting them will free up gigabytes of space.

Deleting duplicate files is easy. Here is what you need to do:

Download Easy Duplicate Finder and install it on your computer
Scan your video, music and photo folders for duplicate files
Delete the duplicates or at least move them to an external hard drive
Step 3: move large files

And last but not least, consider moving large files to an external hard drive. This will not only free up disk space, but will also back up your movies, music and photos.
